I don't know. I'm not in the mood for writing right now. I'm in a thinking mode. Manila does that to me. *sigh* I end up thinking a lot. I think about how much Manila hasn't changed... and changed. And how much I have changed... and haven't. That's as far as I'll go with that thought for now. It's busy, busy. Halloween opens next week, so I'm checking into the hotel from Monday to Saturday. I'm not doing anything this weekend, which is good. I caught a cold in Manila and I feel my throat starting to ache a little. I think I'll be full blown sick by Friday.... Hope not. Watched "A Home At the End of The World" on HBO Signature tonight. Not a great movie, but it struck chords nonetheless. And Colin is hot... Anyway, so are these ladies... the incomparable, Idina... And I don't really know who this lady is, but I LOVE HER... and Joey is actually quite good. Will write more about my Manila trip next time...

Friends, relatives, loved ones -- Cole Fortich Laparan was born today, September 14, 2006, at 9:12 am.This is the wonderful text I got this morning. I'll remember it forever. I was in a cab heading to the Shanghai airport, an hour trip on smooth road. Jen, the park choreographer who was with me on this trip, was telling me how expensive using my roaming in Shanghai would be. Then I get this text and all I wanted to do was call. Ha ha. I waited though till I got to Hong Kong which would only be a couple hours later anyway. Perfect timing. I'll be home this weekend just in time to see baby Cole (I was growing fond of calling him Baby Stitchy though). Cole. Chloe and Cole. Aw... Oh my God, Chloe's an Ate. *wiping tears* Oh, pics from Shanghai... Since it was, after all, a business trip, I didn't have real time to play tourist. That was as close as I got to the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. We got in at 11 pm Tuesday night. Hard to believe we had just gotten through the anniversary event that morning. An hour trip to the hotel and we all went straight to our rooms. No Star World on TV. Boredom. Gorgeous room though. My view was another building being built. Ugh. Anyhoo. My call the next morning was still at 9, so I woke up an early 7 am, had breakfast, and walked around the hotel area. Nothing much really. I took a couple boring pics. There are bikes EVERYWHERE. Even stoplights just for bikes (imagine that instead of a lit green, red, or yellow circle, it's a lit green, red, or yellow bike outline. Cute.) Everything was actually quite similar to Hong Kong. Just dirtier and more air space, not as building-y as Hong Kong can get. Then again, I probably wasn't in the right area. I had time after the audition and before Lion King to relax by the pool. That's my toe. There was no one around. Quiet. Serene. *sigh* Then it was off to the Grand Theater... I knew a Filipina in the cast who I had done a musical with in Manila. Pride. Imagine that. Lion King twice in the same year. I've been very lucky. It is such an amazing show. I'll keep my thoughts about the principals to myself. All I'll say is that the New York cast... was PHENOMENAL. And that one of the most powerful moments in musical theater has got to be the "He Lives In You" reprise where Simba finds the strength to reclaim his throne from Scar. The stage, in seconds, goes from star lit night sky to full dancing chorus, white light, and soft blue. Simba sings above the singing chorus and rich african rhythm. I cried the first time and again. Check out sort of what I mean... (they mixed the song and the reprise itself for this Rosie performance...) Cultural things: Mufasa's death. The Lionesses cry by pulling white streamers from the eyes of the masks they wear above their heads. It's beautiful. The audience however BURST OUT LAUGHING. ???? Rafiki spoke a little mandarin in one of her scenes, much to the audience's delight. Zazu sings a bit of a popular mandarin song, I presume, during a scene where he usually spoofs Disney by singing It's A Small World. Inside a taxi cab I rode: Passengers are not allowed to carry contraband goods, smoke, spit, or to dump inside the taxi. Psychos or drunkards without guardians are prohibited to take taxis. I saw a lingerie store called "Easy Shop." Charming. That's it. Shanghai in 5 minutes or less. Back to work tomorrow and back to Manila tomorrow night. I'M AN UNCLE SQUARED!!!!! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!! Welcome to the world It's waiting just for you Starting today every step of the way I'll help you as you grow Welcome to the world Say hello!

This was the scene one year ago today... And it wasn't rain those umbrellas were being used for. Think a million exectives in three piece suits, sitting in front of the castle, frying under the unreasonable sun. This was the scene today, one year later... Media risers. Photographers. Reporters. And umbrellas and raincoats everywhere you looked. The rain just wouldn't stop. And I'd been there since 7 am. And to make things a bit sweeter, it was chilly. As in thick-jacket chilly. Too early for "winter" but it was a nice preview for the weather we know is coming sometime next month. Anyhoo, spirits were still up. Everyone was still smiling, all you can do really when it's something you can't control. The magic moment would take place in front of the castle. "When" would be the question. Then we were in luck. In the middle of all that rain came a window of, um... no rain. Green light. Music. To the tune of Be Our Guest (what else?) Mickey and the gang followed by master chefs and a ngillion people began marching out of the castle holding what seemed to be huge cakes... They placed them on this huge platform in front of the castle. Piece by piece (putting it together... mmmm) The final piece would be put in by non other than Hong Kong Disneyland spokesperson, Jacky Cheung... Funny. I used to not really know him outside of his song with Regine many many years ago (Jacky Chan? no, Cheung...) But now whenever I see him (he does a lot of Disney events) I get starstruck. He's actually quite friendly. Yuh. *gaze* Anyway... So with that last piece of cake put in, cue drumroll, orchestral Happy Birthday, streamer blast, and the chimchazillion cast members in front of the castle cheering. Yeah. It was over in 5 minutes but the planning was months. Hours in the studio. Late nights. Re-edits of edits. Zeesh. Yet what an incredible way to celebrate one year. And all I can say is "I was there when". *sigh* I'm back at home now. I left right after the event to rest a bit. Flying to Shanghai tonight! My first time. I'm excited. Don't think I'll get to go around, but I'll be sure to take pictures of whatever I see. Till I get back, HAPPY BIRTHDAY HONG KONG DISNEYLAND... and Happy Birthday too Kyla! psst.. love you Bu. See you in a few!

It was one helluva week. I was at work from 11 am to 11 pm everyday. From TV shootings, to cast change rehearsals, to voice over recordings, to vocal sessions, to anniversary rehearsals, to answering emails, it was a colorful week in the life. I made my music deadlines for the week so I'm very very happy. This week, is much more relaxing. Tuesday is our one year anniversary celebration right after which I'm flying to Shanghai for auditions. Auditions Wednesday, and hopefully Lion King. Flying back Thursday. Rehearsals and office work on Friday, then off to Manila Friday night for a peaceful weekend in the country. I had hoped my sister will have given birth already so I can see baby Stitchy, as Chloe loves to call him in tribute to Disney's favorite little alien experiment 626... not my fault. But she hasn't yet. Angel, you one week! And with all that travelling this week, I'm ironing and packing for EVERYTHING tomorrow. Or if I'm still feeling up to it, tonight. While doing my usual youtube.com surfing, I landed on this... She is so amazing. What an awesome song! I had to find out where it was from. I traced it to this. The musical Violet. Very Leap of Faith... Am halfway through Arrested Development season 3. It's hilarious. It's like they knew they weren't getting renewed and are just pulling out all the stops. I mean get this *SPOILER UP AHEAD* Charlize Theron plays the British girlfriend of Michael Bluth played by Jason Bateman. Her uncle, in questioning their relationship, says that Michael wouldn't have fallen for her if he knew her a year ago, before all the plastic surgery... followed by a quick shot of Charlize from the movie Monster. Hahaha... Oh dear. Only 6 more episodes to go. I don't want it to end yet... *sigh* One week Angel...

I've got fifteen minutes break before my next rehearsal at 7. Thought I'd blog. My life for September in a nutshell.Festival of the Lion King. Halloween. The Golden Mickeys. Halloween. First year anniversary. Halloween. Shanghai. Halloween. Manila. Halloween. Been getting home near midnight this whole week. I'm sleeping the entire weekend. And getting a haircut. I'm enjoying work though. There's a lot going on but it feels really good to check things off my list. And a tiny thrill when things get added. And what's great is, even with the work piling up, the load feels lighter. Hmm... I wonder why... I wonder why... Damn... time to go. rhapsody [

So apparently they've confirmed the 30 minute stage show of Finding Nemo the Musical to open at the Animal Kingdom later on this year. I've heard the score and it's AMAZING. They had a press preview of one song, Big Blue World. Check it out... (the lady speaking is Anne Hamburger who is the VP of Creative entertainment for parks and resorts...)Isn't the song just adorable? I mean, if you know the movie well enough. It's amazing how much of the movie they breeze through in that one song! From getting out of their home all the way to "the drop-off?!?!" The music is written by the Avenue Q team so it's quite lyrical and clever. It's so exciting to see this clip and one day maybe, see the show. Ahhhhh! My niece would love it! Saturday night. Had to drop by work to attend a meeting. Who would've thought little ol me would head monthly meetings with the music department. Then again I am turning 30, it's about time. After the meeting, I hit the gym(I've been a good boy), then got a massage (it's been an endless week),then spent half an hour chatting with Josh over the phone while going around Park N' Shop pushing a grocery cart. I so felt like a housewife. haha. Picked up a box of brownie mix. Figured I'd try. I have an oven and almost never use it. Let's see what happens. The Bu is getting creative writing a play for his thesis which I plan to write songs for. I'm once again very inspired by the fish musical up there (nemo) and the fish musical down there (ariel). I've been so into the Jason Robert Brown and Andrew Lippa music, I've forgotten that simple singable music, a-la-Alan Menken and Avenue Q folks, still work very well. Should be fun collaborating with Andrei again. Been loving the final season of Will and Grace (or as Karen calls them, Wag... "hey Jack, hey Wag!" "huh? wag?" "Yes, Will And Grace... wag" "Good thing my name ain't Frank..."). Funny. Without commercials, the episode goes by in 20 minutes. I'm almost done and I don't want to be. *sigh* It's still a great show, but I think their earlier seasons were much better. Unlike Friends, where I thought their later seasons were much funnier. *sigh* So far in this last season, the Sound of Music episode was theeee funniest. *beware, spoilers comin' up* Everyone goes to a Sound Of Music Singalong movie. Grace dresses up as Maria, Will as Captain Von Trapp, and Jack as one of the Von Trapp children wearing the curtain outfit Maria made for them in the movie. In the episode, Karen gets in trouble with theater management and looks for Will, Grace and Jack to help her out. Suddenly Rosario enters the picture, dressed up as Mother Superior and tells them to hide in the darkness of the supplies cabinet. Tension rises and the door opens. It is Ralph (pa dum pum)... The food counter vendor who Jack was flirting with earlier. If you know the scene, you can imagine what happened next. "No Ralph..." Whistle blows... It's an incredibly funny episode. And that's it. Wonder what's on TV... Sea turtles? duuuude... rhapsody [

I got incredible news in the email today. This. Woohoo... I loved this small musical when I saw it New York. Simple. Sweet. Loved it. And it's FINALLY coming out with a soundtrack. I have to get it. Somehow. Hmm...Booked my ticket to Manila today. I love on-line booking. Got it done in less than 5 minutes. Quick weekend trip mid-September. I've got a longer break in October where I've decided to take a pamper-myself break in Cebu with Andrei (they've got direct flights from here to there). Can't wait... Ooh, if you love Last Five Years, you're gonna love this... Sherie Rene Scott singin it her own incredible way. I love her! Talk about subtext. And I just found this out. They're working on a broadway version of The Little Mermaid and even worked on a demo album with Kerry Butler of Hairspray as Ariel. And someone actually posted the song on youtube using shots from the film as background... "If only it were true, if only for a while. If only you would notice how I ache behind my smile..." And what a nice touch to hear the intro of Part of Your World embedded into the score like that. Niiiiiice.September 1 today. Man, time is just flying by. It's HALLLOOOOOWWWWWWWWWEEEN soon! | |||||||||||||
